BLOG: Harvey

Our favourite new (old) film! More charming than ever, James Stewart plays Elwood P. Dowd, an endlessly pleasant & delightfully eccentric bachelor living in a small town that isn’t quite aware that its newest citizen is a 6’3” white rabbit named “Harvey,” that only certain people can see. After supposedly meeting this rabbit, Dowd’s sanity is put into question by his equally eccentric sister. Made in 1950 this film hasn’t dated at all, we won’t tell you if you actually get to see the rabbit or not though. The first image here is clever, the second is kind of creepy, in a good way.

For more than 50 years, Phil Stern has captured images that we now recognize as iconic and familiar. The late Norman Granz of Verve Records commissioned Phil to photograph an endless stream of Jazz greats. These sleeves show Stern’s remarkable photographs paired with sophisticated typography, or simply the Verve logo. The image of Ella and Louis is particularly arresting and still manages to look contemporary.

A clip of Dieter Rams from the 2009 film Objectified. We recommend watching but if you rather read here is what he says, it is as applicable to graphics as it is product design. “In my experience users react positively when things are clear and understandable. That’s what particularly bothers me today, the arbitrariness and thoughtlessness with which many things are produced and brought to market. Not only in the sector of consumer goods, but also in architecture, in advertising. We have too many unnecessary things everywhere.”

London based art & design practice Troika were commissioned to create a signature piece of sculpture for Terminal 5 at Heathrow.

In response, they created ‘Cloud’, a five meter long digital sculpture whose surface is covered with 4638 flip-dots that can be individually addressed by a computer to animate the entire skin of the sculpture.

Although worth checking if you’re a Mac user is their ‘Newton Virus’...

We are puzzled by this video, is the machine real or CG? How is the camera moving around like that? Does it matter? It’s fun to watch and a reminder of classics like Peter Gabriel’s Sledge Hammer. We hear that the video was filmed in a two story warehouse, in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. The “machine” was designed and built by the band, along with members of Syyn Labs over the course of several months. Directed by James Frost, OK Go and Syyn Labs.

When the Dutch architect Rem Koolhas met Galahad Clark, the seventh generation of the Clark’s shoe-making dynasty, a strange new shoe brand was born. United Nude. This shoe, the Eamz is conceptually inspired by a furniture design classic; the Charles and Ray Eames chair. The United Nude Eamz shoe is an ode to their vision. It’s great to see an unusual crossover of disciplines at the intersection between design and fashion; architecture, furniture design and shoe making all creating something familiar but totally unique.
