Our new studio books
Posted on 06/07/10.
We have just got our new studio books hot off the press! Both of the 24 page sewn booklets are printed two colour on 25% cotton white uncoated stock. The first–All About Us–uses mixtures of Yellow and Magenta to create a different colour for every spread. The second–The Importance of Professional Design–uses Yellow and Cyan to create a gradient of greens. A die-cut tabbing system is used to make it quick and easy for readers to find the information they are looking for. For more info or a copy feel free to get in touch.

Jürgen Bergbauer
Posted on 24/06/10.
Studien nach der Natur (Studies After Nature) by German artist Bergbauer is an archive of 665 photographs of 152 different rock forms that were found at the roadside. Bergbauer photographed them from various perspectives and arranged them, by “form and applicability.” Each of the plates are presented on solid off white backgrounds and are based on the compositional criteria of the form of the object and positioning of the objects within Bergbauer’s defined space.

The Swing Era

We just came across this book and its fantastic cover in a local thrift store. A “break” in the Lindy Hop is shown in this high-speed action picture taken in 1943 by LIFE photographer Gjon Mili. Dancers Kaye Popp and Stanley Catron demonstrate the dance, named originally for Lindbergh’s 1927 flight to Paris. Also seen here is another image from the same series. More to come from the great Gjon Mili soon, watch this space.

Die farbe

Great crossover here of two Swiss greats. This is the catalogue for a 1944 Zurich art exhibition by painter Johannes Itten - Johannes Itten: Die Farbe - with book cover designed by Max Bill. “Die Farbe” is German for “colour.” From 1919 to 1922, Itten taught at the Bauhaus, developing the innovative “preliminary course” which was to teach students the basics of material characteristics, composition, and colour.

In June 2005, to coincide with Penguin Books’ 70th anniversary, Derek Birdsall, Jerry Cinamon, Romek Marber, John Miles, David Pelham and Penguin Press’s current art director Jim Stoddart, all delivered illustrated talks at the V&A on their work designing for Penguin. These talks have been edited and collected into a 184-page B-format paperback, with all 250 of the speakers’ slides and book covers reproduced in colour.
